Members of the United States Congressional delegation including Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Senators Lindsey Graham and Ben Sasse, come to Taiwan to show support for the people of Taiwan. Chinese warships conducted a “combat readiness patrol” on Thursday, a day after the visit of a congressional delegation of U.S. lawmakers, a Chinese military spokesman said. The patrol was targeted at “defensive purpose,” said ministry spokesman Wu Qian.
The patrol near the Taiwan Strait is “part of the all-out effort to maintain stability on the Taiwan Strait,” Wu said. “China’s armed forces will continue to conduct such combat readiness patrols around Taiwan, until the time when normal peace and stability on the Taiwan Strait can be fully restored.”
In late September, Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, visited the island.
Her trip raised tensions with Beijing, which considers Taiwan part of its territory.
