Customer reviewsYou need 'em but you can't trust 'em
To be fair, I use these to put up smooth-finish Hardiplank and that may be the hardest to support securely. But these things slip when holding the weight of a full 12-foot-long board and there's no sweet spot where the levers are just tight enough but not too tight, as the instructions warn against. So put them near the ends of the board you're hanging and check at one end just before nailing at that end. Then check at the other end just before nailing there because vibration from the first shot will cause the second gauge to slip. Then nail off between the two ends. Don't forget the flashing at the free end. Slippage that happens while nailing from end to end causes board ends to sag and not align along the wall. In fact, don't just trust the gauges measure, too, before nailing.
