A man has fallen to his death after a hot air balloon flying in Israel accidentally dropped him.

Eyewitnesses described how the man was struggling to get off the balloon at the time, which was taking part in an event in Tel Aviv.

It has since been confirmed by Israeli police that he has died of his injuries.

Gael Sabiel, who filmed the incident on his phone, told The Associated Press: “I was photographing when I heard a loud sound.”

“It was a loud thud and I saw a man lying on the ground.”

He added: “People gathered around and realised it was a hot air balloon that had hit him.”

Although the incident did not appear to involve an accident with the craft itself, it prompted police to summon the skies above Tel Aviv as a potential crime scene.

In recent years, balloon flights over Israel have proved dangerous, with 20 people falling to their deaths between 2013 and 2018, according to newspaper Haaretz.

National Transportation Authority spokesman Yigal Palmor said police had launched an investigation into the incident.

“This is the first such incident in the last six years and police are investigating whether this could be an accident or something more serious,” he said.

He added that hot air balloons are more common over the summertime in Israel due to its balmy temperatures, which are several degrees above freezing.
