( CNN ) — An investigation is under way into the death of a woman discovered in her home, after passersby noticed blood “spattered” on her floor and smelled a foul odor.
New York City authorities are investigating it as a homicide, and have asked for the public’s help in identifying the victim, who was described as a 60-year-old black woman.
The neighborhood where she was found is a working-class section of Far Rockaway in Queens, about 6 miles from the NYPD’s Midtown North precinct.
About 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday, members of the NYPD’s Cold Case Squad received a 911 call from passersby. When they arrived, they found the body of a woman, who had been dead for at least 24 hours, according to Deputy Chief Carlos Gomez.
It appeared that her upper body was bound and she was strangled. There were injuries to her head, Gomez said.
Authorities haven’t released any information on a weapon or the suspect in the crime.
The medical examiner will have to determine her cause of death, he said.
